Tundra swans in abundance

Tundra Swans are abundant here on the Alaska Peninsula, but that reflects the vast acreage of this area. Breeding densities appear to be low by my prairie standards – probably less than one pair per square mile. In mid-August the birds are still largely isolated on breeding wetlands and most of the adult pairs have 2-4 young on the same wetland.

Trumpeter Swans also breed in Alaska, but they tend to be restricted to inland areas rather than coastal areas.
